    Sustainable Pittsburgh's sustainable business network, Champions for Sustainability (C4S)has launched a series of workshops that advance the mutually reinforcing agendas of sustainability and healthcare. Designed for executive leadership, this June 2nd event will showcase how healthcare organizations can tap into opportunities for producing better health outcomes, reducing costs and finding new sources of revenue by pursuing a sustainable approach to healthcare operations. Participants will have a chance to interact with a range of internationally-recognized practitioners who have implemented sustainable solutions in the healthcare industry in the wake of a variety of challenges. Breakfast will be provided. Cost: $45 for C4S/Sustainable Pittsburgh Members, $65 for nonmembers and a special rate for students.

    Backyard Composting Workshops

    This workshop thoroughly covers the importance of composting, setting up a compost pile, proper maintenance and ways of using finished compost. Participants will receive an Earth Machine Compost Bin with attendance. This bin, approved across the state as an ideal bin for urban and suburban areas, has an eighty-gallon capacity.

    Marcellus Summit

    In the heart of the Marcellus Shale region, sportsment and women, and conservation groups are working together to identify and propose solutions to mitigate the impacts from gas drilling and hydraulic fracturing on hunting, fihsing and trapping experiences. Learn more about the Sportsment Alliance for Marcellus Conservation efforts and listen to experts in the field, along with sportsmen and women with first-hand experience, discuss the following topics: 1) Potential impacts of Marcellus Shale gas development on wildlife, coldwater fisheries, and habitat and forest ecosystems; 2) Impacts of Marcellus Shale gas development on the outdoors experience; 3) Lessons from oil & gas development in the West; 4) What you can do as an individual outdoorsmen; and 5) How sportsment and women interests can be protected through policies and best management practices that protect fish, wildlife and the outdoors experience. Registration opens at 8:00 a.m. and opening remarks will be offered at 8:45 a.m. The conference will conclude by 4:30 p.m. Attendance at the Summit is free. However, space is limited and registration is required. Registration closes May 31st.

    Dead Man's Hollow Clean Up

    Allegheny Land Trust (ALT) is inviting the public to help collect trash and maintain trails on its Dead Man's Hollow Conservation Area from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 4, 2011. Allegheny Land Trust staff will be on site coordinating clean-up activities. ALT's Dead Man's Hollow Preserve is located in Elizabeth, Liberty and Lincoln communities. The property is accessible from the Yough River Train and Great Allegheny Passage Train 1/2 mile downstream from the Boston Bridge. The Wildlife Preserve at Dead Man's Hollow encompasses 440 acres of highly significant wildlife habitat. The Preserve is the largest privately protected conservation area in Allegheny County.

    Party and fundraiser for Friends of the Riverfront. Settings its stage at Steel City Rowing Club's green boathouse along the Allegheny River, this year's annual Trail Mix(er) celebrates Friends of the Riverfront's 20th Anniversary. Featuring a full, picnic-style dinner, themed bars, boat trips to Allegheny Land Trust's Sycamore Island (reservations required), and opportunities to rub elbows with the seen and not so seen superstars of Pittsburgh's trails and environment. Performances by Boca Chica, Caleb Lovely, The Turbosonics and DJ Mary Mack. You'll also have the opportunity to browse and bid on a variety of auction items, including items related to the riverfronts and local entertainment.

Participants will travel this National Wild and Scenic River by canoe from Hallton, Pa., to Cooksburg during the two-day event. The trip includes activities and presentations on the theme "Into the WILDS," which focuses on the ecology and history of the river.     We'll be helping in this cleanup of Nine Mile Run Watershed, sponsored by Royal Tribe Music. The goal of the cleanup is to engage young people in helping to clean up our valuable greenspaces and educate them abou the importance of keeping our watersheds clean. We'll be working with the Nine Mile Watershed Association on this project. All teens are encouraged to participate with a parent's permission and a waiver signed by a parent/guardian (if under 18).

    Bird Walk Breakfast

    Join us as we bird the 9 Mile Run Valley, and learn about the ecological restoration efforts in the southern end of the park. In the past, we have been delighted to see some unusual winged visitors - come see if we get any pleasant surprises this year. Chuck Tague and Jack Soloman lead this outing. Breeding birds should be active. An Orchard Oriole nested in the valley last June, so we may see it, or its more common cousin, the Baltimore Oriole. Carolina Chickadees, Carolina Wrens, Yellow Warbler, Scarlet Tanger, and Indigo Bunting - they're all possible in the watershed on an early June morning! A later breakfast will be provided.
